In this article, Andrew Martin discusses how Donald Antrim is one of the best authors to depict feelings of overwhelming anxiety and other feelings such as panic, grief, and despair. Martin talks about the relatability and wild shifts of his character’s moods in stories such as The Verificationist and The Afterlife, a memoir about his mother from his own perspective where he deals with these overwhelming feelings. Although I have only read one of his stories, I am eager to read more, as I think we can all somewhat relate to these characters and their depictions of sheer chaos and panic, sometimes through comedic outlets. In The Emerald Light in the Air, the main character, Billy, struggles with the loss of his parents and grandfather, as well as the end of his relationship with the love of his life, Julia. If I were to interpret anything from this story, it is that life constantly beats you down, but it’s how you choose to deal with it that matters. I believe the author of this article, Andrew Martin, agrees. I would love to read more stories by Antrim so that I have a better basis and understanding of what his characters have in common, in addition to who he is as a person.
